with the news of paul simon's upcoming three-part residency at the brooklyn academy of music this april (ear farm has a nice list of five other "parts" there could've been), i was compelled to revisit one of my favorite albums of his, 1972's self-titled solo debut...while hits like "mother and child reunion" & "me and julio down by the schoolyard" show early glimpses of the world influences simon has become synonymous with, most of the album is a low-key, quiet affair, focused around fantastic songwriting & understated musicianship from some of the best session players in the business...it's also pretty cool that simon took his time to craft the album, recording in kingston, paris, san francisco & new york over the course of several months...from beginning to end, it's definately one of the best, if overlookled, albums of his career.download: paul simon - duncan
